The European Association Radon Spas eV Science Prize |  | The idea | As a result of the 3rd Biophysical Working Conference on " The Medical and Biological Effects of Radon Balneology and Low Doses of Radiation - Looking Back and Looking Forward" held in Bad Schlema on 7th - 9th September 2001, and in order to continue the scientific results on this subject, which were made known to the delegates, the Working Group of European Radon Spas set up a science prize during the spring conference in 2002 in Regensburg. Other interested institutes, persons and bodies may join the prize-giving committee.
In order to allow the recognition of achievements made by participating research scientists working on different specialist areas, the prize may be awarded to any branch of balneology, which will be examined on the basis of the paper presented.
The prize is designed to ensure that scientifically based work, which underpins the quality of services provided, is continually carried out on all issues related to radon balneology.
The prize supports and promotes both fundamental and applied research on the subject of radon and its role in therapeutic processes. In this respect organisations, groups and individual persons may be awarded the prize for their scientific achievements. | The prize | € 10,000 (in words, ten thousand euros) will be made available as prize money by the Working Group of European Radon Spas at intervals of 2-3 years for the first time in 2003. The appointed jury makes the final decision about allocating the prize money. Decisions may not be challenged in the courts. | The jury | The partners in the Working Group of European Radon Spas and other organisation/persons offering the award appoint a jury, which consists of 7 persons. Representatives of the following committees should be appointed:
- 1 representative of the partners of the Working Group of European Radon Spas
- 2 doctors from spas associated with the Working Group of European Radon Spas
- 1 representative of a research institute
- 3 other members of associated organisations involved in awarding the prize and various research institutes
The representative of the Working Group of European Radon Spas will chair proceedings. All the activities carried out by the jury are on a voluntary basis. | Content | The prize rewards achievements,
1. which provide further scientific knowledge about radon balneology, 2. which define the criteria by which the quality of radon balneology can be measured, 3. which demonstrate and provide clarification about the working mechanisms, especially in the molecular area and in the transfer process.
Papers will only be eligible, if the results were discovered and published no more than 2 years before the time of the award. This only applies to the prize-giving ceremony in 2003. | Submission | To qualify for the prize, a written paper on a relevant subject must be submitted. This must be complemented by supplementary documentary material provided in a suitable form. The selected papers will be presented during the scientific forum at each autumn conference. The presentation may also complement subjects already being discussed. The submitted documents must be written in the German language and will also be assessed in German. | Prior notice/selection | | Interested scientists, institutes and persons should inform the jury using the official application forms that they wish their planned research work to be entered for the prize-giving competition.
